As per the Buddhist scriptures, the snails symbolised over the Gautam Buddha statue came to sit over the head of the Buddha. It was a period when Gautama Buddha was once engrossed in a deep meditation. During the daytime, he was meditating under a tree, when he became so absorbed in the practice of meditation that he was unaware of what was happening in the surroundings. During the midday, the Sun became extremely hot, and it was just above the bald head of Gautama Buddha. At that sensitive moment, 108 snails made their way over the Buddha's body, reached the surface of his head, sat there to save the Buddha from the scorching heat, and eventually sacrificed their lives.
Similarly, Sujata, a farmer's wife, is said to have fed Gautama Buddha a bowl of kheer, a milk-rice pudding, ending his six years of asceticism.
A farmer’s wife Sujata and 108 snails played a significant role in Gautam Buddha’s life to achieve enlightenment. In this painting, a girl with snails and in the background, the lord Buddha in Ajanta art form depicts the mystic story of Buddhism.
