Meenakshi Jha Banerjee is a contemporary painter by profession, working consistently for the past 20 years in Bihar (INDIA) while exploring with the simplistic elements of Mithila, embedded in the folk paintings of the region. Her experimentations with the traditional elements of Mithila has evolved as a signature style of her own where the feelings, emotions, elements, intricacies and tradition merges into current subjects, modern medium and contemporary skill sets. She responds to social actions and contemporarisation. Minute and intricate detailing besides multiple layering is the essence of her palate and mood.

About Meenakshi Jha Banerjee

Artist’s statement

My paintings begin not with the blots and patches of colours on the canvas, they begin on epochs which are alibi to the various shades of emotions I feel during different times. My paintings come alive much later than they are embryoed in my heart. They come to tell a story. Sometimes they tell a story that I didn’t even know before starting on the canvas. When I paint, magic happens to me. I listen to what the canvas says. I feel what the characters emote. They tell me a story and I etch it out. It has been noticed that many of my works portray goddesses or demi-godesses. It is because the otherworldy connects to me via my paints and I showcase them. My world is painted between the god of big things and the god of small things. They merge on my platform. The colourstory as well as details are often inspired by the shades of village folklores of madhubani, where remain my roots
